Worship

We have two definite seasons at St. John’s. The winter season is from November up to Memorial Day weekend and the summer season is from Memorial Day weekend through October . During the winter season, we offer two regular services: Traditional at 9 am and our Praise Service at 11 am. The fellowship coffee gathering during this time is in between services, roughly 10:15 to 10:45 am. During the summer we offer a Blended Service at 10 am, followed with a fellowship hour.

PRAISE worship at 11 am is a lighter liturgy, with shorter praise songs sometimes in a series. The service is set in a jazz and praise beat that encourages singing and group participation. The Praise team is directed by our experienced Bob Corwin on the piano, Danny Flahive on the string base, and Ronnie Mercier on the drums. Both Laura Stave and Samantha Corwin add their rhythmic harmony as lead singers to strengthen the singing, or offer special music. Lessons, sermon, and announcements are the same at both services. But people have a time choice and also a style choice.
BLENDED worship is a hybrid creation that we’ve put together for our summer season at 10 am. We involve all of our musicians, with some hymns and some praise style mixed together. It is less formal than the Traditional, yet having some spirited musical moments like the Praise service. This enables us to worship all together with both worship groups (9 & 11), see friends we’ve missed in the winter, and have more lengthy fellowship time in a common coffee hour after the service. There are similar elements in all the services, with variation in approach, style, timing, and musical setting.

St. John Lutheran Church has been blessed in attracting some of the finest professional musicians in our Valley. We offer a wide variety of musical styles in our worship services. Our traditional service is led by Laura Stave and Patrick Karst. Laura, a gifted vocalist, also leads our choir, “The Celebration Singers”. Our praise service is a more contemporary musical format. We are extremely fortunate to have the renowned Bob Corwin as our Director, Danny Flahive on Bass, and Ron Mercier on Percussion. Along with this great group of musicians, St. John’s enjoys the vocal soloists Samantha Corwin and Laura Stave. We also have a number of members of our congregation who share their musical talents with us on many occasions. Please come and join us at one of our services and be uplifted by these inspired and talented people.

Worship Opportunities

One exciting and inclusive aspect of our weekly worship service is the involvement of our members in the worship service as Service Assistants. Ushers greet members as they enter the church and receive their bulletins. Communion Assistants assist the pastor as they serve communion every week. Readers from the church membership do the Bible readings for each service.

Everyone is welcome to assist in any or all of these ways. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people, serve the Lord, and be more active in the church.

Millie Taylor is the coordinator of these three Service Assistants. Please contact Millie for more information: iammillietaylor@gmail.com

Sunday

Please note the summer and winter schedules below:

The 9:00 A.M. Sunday service is a traditional Lutheran setting with Holy Communion served every Sunday. The organ accents this service with seasonal appearances by our choir.

The 11:00 A.M. celebration is more contemporary with the emphasis on “Praise Songs”, the Word, Prayer and Holy Communion each Sunday.

Kids’ Church is held at 11:00 A.M. each Sunday during the winter schedule and at 10:00 A.M. during the summer schedule.

Summer Schedule – 10:00 AM Blended Worship (May 29th through October 30th)
Winter Schedule    – 9:00 & 11:00 worship times will resume on November 6th

Child Care for infants through 3 years is provided each Sunday in our child care center (nursery) located at the west end of the church.

ST. JOHN’S BASICS

People who wish to become members attend an orientation course to learn the basics and more about the Christian faith. Pastor Charles is the leader. Efforts are made to introduce new people to both each other and the ministries of St. John’s. Classes occur periodically.

Music

St. John’s has one of the best music programs in the Desert. Our team consists of spiritually gifted musicians who assist us in our worship.
